Weeks 5 and 6 Notes

To round out our unit on "Reflecting Reality," our work with impressions and experiences, and similes and metaphors, Comm Arts students worked through Eugenia Collier's short story "Marigolds." Collier depicts the poignant transition from childhood to adulthood of Lizabeth as she learns that negotiating "real life" is complicated and, at times, paradoxical.

This story will serve as our transition into the next unit we will begin this coming week: Exploring Conflicts. Not only can we see how Collier uses associations and reflections of a childhood experience in order to make sense of the reality in which she lives, and her use of marigolds as an extended metaphor for hope, we will be able to explore several of the types of conflicts that will be introduced in the coming week.
